How to grow sprouts at home

After sharing tips on nutrition with some clients, they asked me “how do you grow sprouts at home?” I’ll show you how to do it in 5 simple steps.

Growing sprouts at home is surprisingly easy and really doesn’t take much time!

To get started, you will need:

  • Sprouter, which is a system to grow sprouts. There are many brands and various systems to grow sprouts. I’ve tried several, including the Seeds Are Easy sprout jar from seedsareeasy.com; also, do-it-yourself sprouter, such as Mason jar covered with food grade mesh; or, my favourite option, the BioSnacky Original seed sprouter. There are a lot of great options on the market, I’m sure you will find something you'll like!
  • Seeds. You can grow mung bean, soybean, alfalfa, chickpea, clover, barley, quinoa, sesame and sunflower seeds, onion and leeks, radish, daikon, spinach and many others. The variety is just amazing! You can buy seeds specifically packaged for sprouting, but many organic seeds from health food stores, or even grocery stores can be entirely suitable.
  • Water.

Let’s get started! I’ll be using a more common system, my Seeds Are Easy sprout jar.

Step 1. Prepare. Clean your sprout jar well and rinse with water.

Step 2. Rinse your seeds. Place the seeds in the jar, fill with fresh cold water and pour the water out.

Step 3. Soak! Pour plenty of cold water in the jar, to cover the seeds. Move the seeds around from time to time to fully hydrate them. Soaking can take 4 to 12 hours, depending on the seeds you choose. I am soaking little radish seeds for 12 hours, as directed on the package. Keep those soaking seeds in a bright warm place, but avoid direct sunlight.

Step 4. Water the seeds by rinsing and draining, twice a day.

Step 5. Harvest you fresh, crunchy shoots and sprouts 3 to 7 days later. It took 6 days for my little radish sprouts to be ready.

Easy, isn’t it? And it gets even easier after you go through this process a couple of times.

Now, are you curious how the BioSnacky sprouter works? I prepare it by washing with cold water. Then rinse up to 3 types of seeds in a sieve under running water. Scatter a thin layer of seeds on each seed tray, and stack the trays on top of each other. Water twice a day and harvest your sprouts after a few days.

You can store sprouts in the fridge for 2 to 3 days. I hope you have fun with your indoor sprout growing projects and improve your nutrition!
